Hey, This analysis is going to be difficult to explain, but here goes...

 

We are currently using this:

if we order 3000 pieces it comes down to $2.50

 

Now the display comes down to LED MAtrix ~ approximately $8.33

 

So with the Adafruit Feather M0 Bluefruit LE, the Battery, the display, minus a switch (should be cheap), and no case.. Total = $41.28

 

Let's call that Widget A using processor board option 0 in my attached notes with links.

Widget B - using processor board option 1 is basically the same capabilities in more parts, total cost without switch and case = $44.36

Now that seems a few dollars higher with more parts, not good.  let's suppose we eliminate a charger and a battery and go to regular alkaline...

 

that saves us $3 + $2 and we need to add a case holder for batteries

Now finally,

 

If it where possible to run the code more on the phone and less on the arduino for animations, scrolling will fit in the memory provided, but animation of complexity might require more memory.  We might be able to use the 

 

Pro Micro ATmega32U4

 

8-bit AVRs with 32kB of flash memory

 

mush less than the ATSAMD21G18 ARM Cortex M0 processor, This chip has a whopping 256K of FLASH (8x more than the Atmega328 or 32u4) and 32K of RAM (16x as much)!

 

if this were possible to program, again not sure if it is... then pricing would be reduced radically:

Cost with everything minus switch and case with battery and charger would come down to 4.75 + 8.33 + 3 + 2 + 17.50 = $35.58 

 

Without charger and battery, but battery holder case = 30.58

 

Again this is short on memory solution, which might not have capabilities we need to do animations unless I work some programming magic.

 

Now the other costs will be materials for case and switch and labor...

 

So that concludes analysis.  Things are changing all the time and there are other possibilities which are coming up...
